When it comes time to replace a home’s heating system, many homeowners struggle when deciding whether they should opt for an electric heat pump or go with a new gas furnace. While the cost of each system heavily weighs in on your decision, it’s important to understand exactly how each one works so that you can be sure you’ve chosen a system that caters to your location, situation and comfort standards – even if that means splurging now to save later.

Thanks to Angie’s List, the following are a a few facts about each system to help you decide:

Electric Heat Pumps:

  • Rely on electricity.
  • Decreased risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and fires in your home.
  • Utilize refrigeration cycles to generate heat.
  • Can be noisier than desired.

Gas Furnace Systems:

  • Rely on a flame.
  • Powered by sources such as natural or propane gas.
  • Increased risk of fires and carbon monoxide leaks.
  • Better suited in cold climates than heat pumps.

Still not sure which system works for you? Contact Airtech of Stamford today! Our technicians are available to install both electric heat pump systems and gas furnace systems, and will guide you towards making the right decision based on your location and budget. As you prepare for the change in weather, it’s likely that you’re starting to take a look at your furnace and other heating accessories to guarantee your warmth as the days and nights get cooler. In doing so, have you had a chance to take a look at your heating vent’s covers yet? If your cover is missing, damaged, or simply not pleasing to look at it, you can easily replace it on your own! See below for a few DIY tips to help you get started:

  1.  If a vent cover is still there, start by removing it by taking out any screws that are currently holding it in place.
  2. Carefully measure the opening in your floor or ceiling, then cross check your measurements with the vent cover you had prior (if available).
  3. Look for any items that seem to be tangled within the duct work. If nothing substantial has fallen in, take a few minutes to vacuum and dust the vent to keep it clean of all other small debris!
  4. Install your new vent cover by placing it into the open vent space. If the cover doesn’t sit well at first, don’t panic! A simple adjustment such as widening the hole may be all it takes to complete the project.

At Airtech of Stamford, we recommend looking at your heating system now so that you can be sure all repairs are complete before the cold weather really sets in. If you still need to perform your fall maintenance or suspect that repair or replacement is necessary, contact us at (203) 323-2959 today for help!
