Now that the weather is starting to creep into the 70s and higher, cooling systems will be turned on more and more until the summer weather has fully arrived. Aside from having your AC serviced, additional maintenance should be continued by the homeowner. In order to keep your AC unit running smoothly, make sure you…
- Clear Out Debris – The fan blades and louvers on an exterior AC unit can oftentimes become filled with debris. These leaves, sticks, garbage, etc. should be removed immediately as it will impede airflow going into the unit. Clean out any debris by removing the cover of the condenser above the fan blades and using a shop vacuum to suck up anything that’s not supposed to be there.
- Hose It Down – Don’t just grab the hose and start spraying the AC condenser. While you have the cover open, place your hose inside and spray the fins from the inside out. This way you’ll be able to remove any dirt and small pieces of debris you missed earlier without dousing the entire condenser in water — just the fins is fine.
- Level It Off – Grab a leveler tool and check to see if the unit is evenly leveled. A condenser that sits and runs on an angle is likely to experience more wear and tear, thus shortening its lifespan. If the soil has shifted and the unit isn’t perfectly leveled, purchase rot-resistant shims to place underneath for a once again even level.
- Make Some Room – AC condensers are usually placed on the side or back of the house so they’re out of sight. Many homeowners will plant trees, bushes, or shrubs around the unit to keep it out of sight. As a rule of thumb, keep all obstructions at least two feet away from the unit. You want space for proper airflow in order to avoid moisture from building up on the inside. However, it might be a good idea to cover the top of the unit to prevent debris from falling through the spaces of the fan blade cover.
